Web Analytics Advanced Segmentation

Just noticed some really cool features in my Google web analytics account this morning. The new advanced segmentation features are easy to apply by dragging and dropping groups of data to make your own reports. I hope to learn more about these features for measuring SEO in the coming weeks and post my findings.

5 Ways to Transform Your Business in 2008

1. Use Skype - a internet based phone service (Voice Over IP), to make calls on the cheap. Skpye is also easy to use and has many options for your business.

2. Use Google Analytics - to help measure your web site activity, track email newsletter sign ups and increase shopping cart conversions. It's fairly easy to set up and fun to use.

3. Make a Stand - take a position on something like the environment or chronic diseases showing the world and your customers that your company is about more than just profits.

4. Use IM and less Email internally - Checking email throughout the day can be a time consuming task. People tend to be shorter and to the point with IM (instant messaging), resolving business issues more quickly.

5. Collaborate on the Web - Take advantage of web collaboration tools such as Basecamp and Writeboard. Using web based collaboration tools allow you to access projects from any internet connection and keep things nicely organized. Nothing is worse than following long email chains or accidentally deleted attachments.

Clicky Web Analytics

Clicky

Found Clicky, an alternative to Google Analytics with some interesting features you will not find in most analytics tools. One of my favorites is the "Spy" feature. This feature allows you to view activity on your web site in real-time as users click, download or page through your site. Very cool stuff.

Clicky seems like a good solution for small to medium size businesses, web designers or developers getting started in web analytics. I'm also impressed with the data capabilities and easy integration with other technologies such as Google Maps and WordPress.

How to Measure Brand Lift with Web Analytics

Measuring visitor interactivity on your web site can be a daunting task. Google has provided some helpful tips on measuring brand lift in web analytics to help you gain insight into the effectiveness of your campaigns. Visitor metrics like depth of visit and length of visit, coupled with campaign tagging, all help you measure the level of interactivity visitors are having with your site.

It's fairly simple to get the basics of brand lift setup. For email campaigns, paid search, paid links, add a simple campaign ID to each URL and use filters to segment out visitors for each of these metrics:
  • Depth of Visit
  • Length of Visit
  • Visitor Loyalty and Recency
  • Top Content
When faced with the task of showing brand value to your campaigns, these metrics should help greatly. You can begin to view your visitors based on their user behavior, rather than on a click and conversion basis alone.
