Twitter and RSS Adoption Trends

January 16th, 2009

Looking into some interesting Twitter search trends using Google Trends. It appears as though Twitter may be making some progress on the adoption of RSS. As you can see in the graphic above, RSS buzz had some real steam from 2000-2005. RSS began to drop off around 2006 and has been on a slide since.

One other interesting trend is the explosion of Twitter searches. It appears as though the increase in Twitter searches suggests that Twitter may be the magic bullet that RSS needed to reach a more broad audience. Perhaps having a brand rather than a technology behind the idea of RSS has helped fuel a user base. What are your thoughts on where RSS and Twitter are headed?

Look at the data in 4 years and we’ll see how things have turned out.

One pro-RSS force is newspapers’ adoption of it and invitation to their large readerships to follow along.

Thanks for the comment Gab. I think there are still a lot of folks that love and use RSS readers. It seems like what is fueling Twitter is the real-time aspect of information similar to RSS. I think what confused most people when RSS first came out is that it was a technology. For something to reach mass appeal, the technology has to be almost seamless and have a brand behind the idea. I strongly feel that brands are still very powerful in the digital age in spreading ideas.
