2009 Internet Marketing Trends

December 31st, 2008
What trends should internet marketers look for in 2009? I’ve decided to list some of my thoughts on changes in the industry for the coming year, what to expect and emerging marketing opportunities.

Social Media Tools – Just as social media marketing has become more popular over the last few years, so has the need for tools to help marketers manage this space. I expect more analytical and management tools for marketers to help make business sense of social media.

Closed Networks – Google will continue to be the major player in search, but do not underestimate closed networks (LinkedIn) and smaller players that fit a niche. Closed networks will continue to grow and may offer more opportunity to reach your target audience.

Internet TV – I have been hyping online TV services like Joost and Hulu for the past year. This will be the year for internet TV in my opinion. Services have jumped through some technical hurdles and now offer respectable performance over a broadband connection. Entertainment is becoming more personalized, so it only makes sense to watch what you want when you want.

Mobile Marketing - Now that we have more advanced mobile networks and devices (iPhone 3G and G2), companies are beginning to invest in mobile applications that compliment their online experience. Many of these applications will enable real time interaction with product and services. What was cocktail conversation a couple years ago will now become a reality for many mobile consumers.

What trends do you think will be the big movers in 2009?

As all of us join more and more of the ever-evolving social networks, I think you are on track about tools. FriendFeed and SocialThing are a big help but I also find myself aggregating feeds just to try to keep track of the diaspora.

For 2009 I’m wondering if more of the mainstream will get deeper into social media. They’re on YouTube. This year, at least in my circle, more and more have not only joined, but are actually using, Facebook, so what’s next? Will they be Twittering soon or will they focus on Internet TV or music services that have a more defined purpose?

We know that social media junkies are scattered across many services, but I think from a marketing standpoint we’ll be looking more closely at how the demographics change for various services as the public comes on board. I expect we’ll see new usage patterns evolve that affect who we market to where. It will be interesting to see where we’re at next year, and if it is anything we could have predicted now.

It seems like the trend of Facebook gaining popularity over MySpace in the US will continue. Twitter will continue to grow, but keep your eyes open for a leading twitter cloan. The “law of duality” will be in play as sites clamor for a spot at second best. In my opinion, Twitter is more about education than entertainment, so I don’t see Internet TV taking over as a Twitter replacement necessarily. How will we measure the influence of social media? Is there an idea or formula that will dominate the space?

Hey , you have a very good blog, its excellent information in its field. You have done a great job, keep doing it for to help, people like Myself. I read many blogs earlier about this topic. But I never found complete information earlier, but your blog is giving real information. I also have several WordPress blogs. And in my experience social bookmarking, article submission and press release submission is way to quickly quickly get my blog posts spidered and am on page one of Google many times in a few hours.
