"Word of Click" and Social Networking

Back in April of 2006, I used the term Word of Click to describe aspects of viral marketing / social networking performed by Skype to promote their products. This term helped describe the action taken by users to click, rather than speak, to share information over the web. Actions like:

  • On site "Forward to a friend"
  • Bookmarking
  • Tagging
  • etc...

Evidently, this has caught on in the web community since that posting about a year ago. I'm trying now to determine the roots of the phrase to see if it had originated on this blog. Wish me luck!

SEO Tools and Paid Search ROI

I've complied a list of helpful web based seo tools to aid in measuring your paid search effectiveness and search engine ranking. Use these at your own risk.

ROI Calculator (Yahoo) - Use this tool to help measure your spend.

SEO Quake (Firefox) - Be careful not to overuse this one. Google tends to quit after a handful of searches. Plenty of good stats all in one on-page listing.

RankQuest Tool Bar (Firefox) - This tool can help you make improvements to your web site that can make an impact on your overall visibility.

Page Strength (a slightly different metric than Google's page rank) - This gives you a real time view of your site's web footprint based on a variety of metrics.

Steelers vs Browns on Google

It's never to early to think about football season in northeast Ohio. As you can see by search volume in the image on Google, the Cleveland Browns have a slight edge over the Pittsburgh Steelers in what can only be described as "one of the best rivalries in professional sports"...

How to Measure Brand Lift with Web Analytics

Measuring visitor interactivity on your web site can be a daunting task. Google has provided some helpful tips on measuring brand lift in web analytics to help you gain insight into the effectiveness of your campaigns. Visitor metrics like depth of visit and length of visit, coupled with campaign tagging, all help you measure the level of interactivity visitors are having with your site.

It's fairly simple to get the basics of brand lift setup. For email campaigns, paid search, paid links, add a simple campaign ID to each URL and use filters to segment out visitors for each of these metrics:
  • Depth of Visit
  • Length of Visit
  • Visitor Loyalty and Recency
  • Top Content
When faced with the task of showing brand value to your campaigns, these metrics should help greatly. You can begin to view your visitors based on their user behavior, rather than on a click and conversion basis alone.
